Details

Top-down construction – another contractor started at the street level, excavating, removing spoils, and erecting columns to support the slabs and structure as it was being constructed for the five-level parking garage below street level. Top-down construction is rare in D.C. While this is typical construction in New York, this was the first top-down structure erected in the district in many years.

Two contractors working at the same time – the primary challenge was having two sets of teams working on different parts of the structure at the same time. One team worked on the top-down construction while the Miller & Long team worked on the elevated construction.

Planning and flexibility – this project required careful sequencing to ensure the shoring and the placement of the concrete were done at the right time and the right location, so as not to compromise the structure flow. Also, we had to comply with restrictions inherent with construction that occurs in a busy metropolitan area.
