February 1: With $3,000 in borrowed capital, a new Ford truck, and $50 in hand – plus tools and a wheelbarrow – founders Jimmy Long and Jack Miller commence operations.

February 10: Miller & Long secures its first contract, a concrete driveway for a lump sum of $199. This classified ad was placed in the Evening Star on May 24, 1947. The company started pouring driveways, sidewalks, and curbs.

February 15: First employee, B.H. Blassingame, hired – still in Army uniform.

Nick Paleologos was first hired as a summer helper at age 16, for $1.75/hour.

4824 Rugby Avenue, Bethesda, Maryland, becomes the company’s office space.

Miller & Long successfully bid on a 12-story building in Richmond, VA. The building was completed in a record time of 16 weeks. This success positioned Miller & Long for the great boom of high-rise construction in the early to mid-60s, which increased the company’s volume fourfold.

Miller & Long used the nation’s first electric tower crane, at Oglethorpe House in Hyattsville, MD. Sonny Keitt was challenged to learn how to run it, and he soon became known as the best crane operator in the area. Sonny stayed with the company his entire career.
