- 2009 Washington DC Mayor's Environmental Excellence Award
BETHESDA, Md. – Oct. 8, 2009 -- Case Study: Green Builders Council of DC and Miller & Long Company, Inc. Partner of the Year
The Green Builders Council of DC (GBCDC) was formed in 2007, by a group of environmentally conscious developers and construction firms dedicated to achieving higher environmental standards mandated by the District for commercial and residential building projects. In partnership with the DC Students Construction Trades Foundation and the Academy of Construction and Design at Cardozo Senior High School, GBCDC is also a primary resource in the District for training and green certification in the skilled construction trades of carpentry, electrical and HVACR. Plumbing and masonry courses are also being added.
In 2008, GBCDC introduced a green building curriculum for DC Public Schools. Administered in the technology-based training facility at Cardozo Senior High School, the Green Advantage(TM) learning module is a 15-hour overview of green construction principles and methodologies accredited by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). The curriculum is approved for career and technical education by DC Public Schools and endorsed by the US Green Building Council for use in its LEED Certification rating system.
In summer 2009, GBDC and the DC Students Construction Trades Foundation will offer programs for District youth participating in the Mayor's Green Summer Jobs Corps. Students will receive three weeks worth of certified green training in the classroom and then put their new found knowledge to use in a community based project. Instruction will be led by staff at the Cardozo Academy, who will use nationally certified soft-skills curriculum that was developed by the National Center for Construction Education and Research which will be followed by in depth study of "Your Role in the Green Environment," a green training curriculum that was developed in part by GBCDC. Weeks four through nine will be dedicated to field operations to distribute weatherization kits and conduct an energy consumption survey of low income households.
